Important research

Researchers James and Joyce Robertson observed and filmed a special group of children who were in their second and early third year of life. All these children had been completely separated from their mothers and other attachment figures. The Robertson's saw that, unless these young children were receiving responsive substitute mothering from the same caretaker all the time, they typically went through three successive stages. They termed these stages protest, despair, and detachment.
